 Event Cancellation Policy 

This event may be delayed or canceled due to adverse, inclement, or unsafe weather. Should the event be delayed, the starting time of the event will be moved back accordingly. The delay will be communicated to all participants. The management team and local law enforcement has the authority to cancel the event. If cancellation of the event takes place, please follow instructions of the event officials and local law enforcement personnel. Your entry fee is not refundable if an event is canceled due to adverse, inclement, or unsafe weather. The Race Director also reserves the right to modify the course at any time before or during an event by his/her own judgment or if instructed by local law enforcement personnel or park officials.

Athlete Check-In

Per USAT rules, each participant MUST pick up his/her own packet in person. If you do not check in during the designated check-in times in person, you will not be able to participate in the event. All participants 18 years and older must bring a valid photo I.D. to athlete check in. NO PHOTO ID = NO RACE!!! If you are under 18 without a photo ID, your parent or guardian may show their photo ID.

 

Athlete Check-In will be at (please attend one of the following):

  • Saturday, June 22 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Dolphin Beach.

  • Sunday, June 23 from 5:15 AM to 6:45 AM at Dolphin Beach. 

Pre-Race Course Talk

The Pre-Race Course talk will cover important information about the race and include a question and answer segment. It will take place on Saturday, June 22 at the race venue at 5:00 PM. If you are a first timer, attending the pre-race course talk is recommended.

 Wristband 

A unique wristband will be given to participants at athlete check-in. Participants must wear this wrist band at all times on race day. This wristband must remain on until you have removed your bike from transition after the race. This band will identify you as an official participant and allows you access to the transition area. You will not be allowed into the transition area without this band in place.

 Bib Number 

Participants must wear their race bib on the run course at all times. Athletes can either pin their race bib to their shirt or wear it attached to a race belt. Relay teams must transfer bibs between teammates in the transition area. Athletes are required to wear their bib on their front side when going in and out of transition and crossing the finish line.

 

 Bike Adhesive Number 

At athlete check-in, you will be given an adhesive bike number. Your bike must have an adhesive number on to rack on race morning.

 Timing 

Ankle chip timing chips will be distributed to participants on race day only. Athletes must wear their ankle chip at all times during this event. Should you forget your timing chip or loose it during the race, please let race management know so that we can give you another timing chip.

Race Day Information

 Parking 

There is NO PARKING along Spillway, Dolphin Drive or Ashgrove for athletes or volunteers. 

You may NOT stop on Dolphin Drive or Spillway Lane, this is a no drop off zone, do not drive down these roads with the intentions of dropping off your athlete at transition. 

 

You may park along the neighborhood streets but please note if you do this you may be blocked in until the race has finished. If you decide to park along the street please do not block residents driveways, police will ticket for any parking violations.

 

Additional parking is available at Moncure Park and John F Pattie Elementary School. Please note both parking lots are about a half mile walk (or bike ride) away from transition. GPS directions the elementary school to Dolphin Beach - https://ridewithgps.com/routes/40242048.

 

 Venue Map

 Restrooms 

Porta Johns will be available near transition area in the parking lot.

 Morning Procedure 

If you have not already picked up your race packet, you will pick it up on race morning. You will pick up your timing chip near the Athlete Check-in tents. You must have your running bib number with you in order to pick up your timing chip. We recommend you place your timing chip on your left ankle opposite the chainring side of your bicycle.

 

 Body Marking 

Body marking will be required for Triathletes. We will mark one arm and one leg with your race number and mark your calf with your age. You must have your running bib number with you on race morning in order to get body marked. 

Body marking will take place at the timing chip pick up tent, 6:15 AM - 7:45 AM. It is the athlete’s responsibility to ensure that volunteers mark their age as of December 31, 2023, which corresponds to the age division in which the athlete will compete. Please do not apply sunscreen, oil, Vaseline or lotion until AFTER you have been body marked.

 Race Age 

Participants will compete based on their race age. Your race age for the 2023 season is determined by your age on December 31st, 2023.

 Transition Area 

You must be wearing the unique athlete wristband to enter the transition area. Your bike number adhesive must be placed on your bike as well. Please be sure to bring along items received at check-in including race numbers (bib & bike adhesive number), as well as your bike, helmet and other personal gear.  

 

 Race Bike Racking & Transition Area Protocol  

All bikes will be racked on race day only. To enter the transition area, athletes must wear the security wristband received at athlete check-in. The transition area is RESTRICTED TO ATHLETES ONLY**.

 

 How To Properly Rack Your Bike: * 

Find the sticker number on the transition rack that matches your bib number. Hang the seat of your bike from the transition rack in with your front wheel facing away from your sticker on the rack. Place personal items on the ground next to your front wheel. There are NO balloons, inflatable’s or personal markers permitted. Remember your number and rack location.

 

*Per USAT rules, all equipment must be placed in the properly designated and individually assigned bike corral. No person shall interfere with another participant’s equipment or impede the progress of another participant. All bar ends must be solidly plugged. No participant shall bring ANY glass containers into the transition area. All personal trash is to be removed and disposed of by each athlete. Please do not litter.

The Races

 Start Times 

This race will use a wave/mass start format. Both the triathlon and aquabike will start near the waters edge at Dolphin Beach. The duathlon will start near the transition area/start of run course.  

7:00 AM, Wave 1 - Men 39 years & under AND Duathlon/Duathlon Relay start - Yellow Swim Caps

7:03 AM, Wave 2 - Men 40 years and older AND Triathlon Relays (Male, Female, Coed) - Blue Swim Caps

7:06 AM, Wave 3 - Women 39 years & under - Pink Swim Caps

7:09 AM, Wave 4 - Women 40 years and older - Purple Swim Caps

9:15 AM - Start of Youth Splash & Dash

 

 Swim Course

Triathlon and Aquabike

The swim course (750 meters/.5 miles) is a rectangle swim marked with orange buoys on the straights and yellow buoys on each turn corner. The swim will be a counter clockwise swim keeping buoys on your right shoulder. Swimmers will entrance and exit will be on Dolphin Beach. Participants can expect the water temp to be above 80 degrees.

Youth Splash & Dash

The swim open water course will run parallel to the land. 

Required Distances:

Ages 7-10: 50 Meter Swim

Ages 11-15: 100 Meter Swim

USAT Wetsuit Temperature Policy:

  • 78 F or below - wetsuits ARE allowed.

  • 78.1 F to 83.9 F - participants may wear a wetsuit at their own discretion; however, wearing a wetsuit in this temperature range will mean that an athlete is ineligible for awards.

  • 84 F and above: wetsuits are NOT permitted—this is for your own safety.

 Duathon, Leg 1 (run) 

The first leg of the duathlon is 1.5 miles. Duathletes will run .75 miles then turn around and run back to the transition area. This run will start in the same direction as the 3rd leg of the race (2nd run). 

 Bike Course 

Triathlon, Duathlon & Aquabike

This is a TWO loop bike course (12.5 miles) utilizing 2 lanes on the same side of the street. DO NOT CROSS the orange cones! This is a disqualification and with bikes coming the opposite direction is a safety hazard. Make sure you ride to the right and pass on the left. Do not block other athletes from passing.

 

The bike course begins with an uphill climb for the first 100 yards…be prepared and have your bike set up for your easy gear. There are 4 U-Turns on the course and they can be tight turns if you are not accustomed to this type of course. When you see the police and volunteers please slow down to make the U-turns.

 

Upon leaving the neighborhood on your bike, you will enter a merge lane of cones. This merge lane will help cyclists enter the bike course and also allow cyclists beginning their second loop to pass through this area. 

 

On the return to transition, bikers will have same hill that they had leaving transition but this time you are going downhill, at the bottom of this downhill bikers will have a sharp right hand turn and then the dismount line. GO SLOW and under control going down the hill coming back into transition.

Commonly Violated Bike Rules

  • No drafting or blocking.

  • No headphones, iPods, radios. USAT officials will be on the course and penalties will be assessed.

  • Hard shell helmets must be worn and must be fastened before mounting your bike outside the transition area. Failure to fasten your helmet results in an automatic disqualification.

  • Stay to the right to allow faster cyclists to pass on the left.

 Run Course  

Triathlon & Duathlon

The run will be a one loop course (3.1 miles) through Montclair. The run course is a combination of neighborhood roads and sidewalk. When running along Waterway Drive, runners must stay on the sidewalks. Athletes must have their run number facing front before crossing the finish line.

Commonly Violated Run Rules

  • No headphones, earphones or any radio-type devices will be allowed.

  • You must have your run # on your front as you approach the finish line.

 

Youth Splash & Dash

The run will be a out-and-back course using neighborhood roads and sidewalk.

Required Distances:

Youth Ages 7-10 - Run ONE loop - 0.5 mi 

Youth Ages 11-15 - Run TWO loops - 1 mi 

 Aid Stations 

There are NO aid stations on the bike course. You should be prepared to carry your own water and food as you see fit on the bike and run portions of the race. There will be one aid station approximately half way through the run course. This aid station will have cups of water and gatorade only. 

 Race Results 

We will be publishing LIVE results throughout the race. Use your mobile phone and go to www.ripitevents.com/results and click on Lake Montclair Triathlon results. On the results web page, enter your bib number or name to view your individual results.

 Awards 

Awards will be given for the Top 3 overall finishers (male, female and non-binary) for the Triathlon, Duathlon and Aquabike. The are no age group awards for Aquabike. 

 

Additionally awards will be given to:

Triathlon -1st, 2nd & 3rd place in each age group and relays

Duathlon - 1st place in each age group and relays

Age groups are defined as 14-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84.

Youth awards will be given to the top three finishers in the following categories for both boys and girls: 7 yrs, 8 yrs, 9 yrs, 10 yrs, 11 yrs, 12 yrs, 13 yrs, 14 yrs, 15 yrs. There are no overall awards for the youth race.
