THE RACE

Enjoy nature at Lums Pond State Park. Starting and finishing at Area 1, the Bear Trail Half Marathon & 10K uses portions of the Little Jersey and Swamp Forest trails. The course is a mix of single track, wide trails and is relatively flat in elevation. This race is appropriate for all level runners including beginners.

AGE REQUIREMENT

Runners must be at least 14 years old to participate in the Half Marathon.

Runners must be at least 10 years old to participate in the 10K.

Registration transfers are not permitted to other Rip It Events. Race organizers reserve the right to close registration due to capacity limits. Race organizers reserve the right to delay or cancel event due to extreme weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances. Pets, baby joggers/strollers, in-line skates, bicycles, and any other non-official wheeled vehicles are prohibited.

RACE INFO

PACKET PICK UP 

Registered participants are required to pick up their packet before the start of the race. You packet includes your race bib and timing chip. If you're unable to attend packet pick-up, someone may pick up your packet on your behalf. Please choose one of the following packet pick up options:

WAVE START

To ensure runner safety and to reduce the amount of passing during the first few miles of the race, participants have been placed into waves of 50-75 people based on their average pace per mile as entered on the registration form. Each wave will consist of both 10K and Half Marathon participants. Participants must start in their assigned waves. 

 

If your average pace is list incorrectly but only by 15-30 seconds or so, please remain in your assigned wave. If you feel strongly that you should be placed in a different wave, please email us at racedirector@ripitevents.comYour individual run time starts when you cross under the starting arch within each wave. Wave start times will be published one week prior to race day.

BIB TRANSFERS

Allowing a non-registered runner to use your bib is NOT PERMITTED.

RACE CATEGORY CHANGES 

If you decide to switch from the Half Marathon to the 10K (or vice versa), please let us know by email prior to race day or in-person (prior to the start of the race) on race day. The deadline to switch race category by email is Sept 28. Please send email to racedirector@ripitevents.com.

RUN COURSE

The race starts and finishes at Area 1 inside the Lums Ponds State Park. The race uses various sections of the Swamp Forest and Little Jersey trails. Both trails are use natural surface and will be marked indicating the route on race day. Any type of running shoe is appropriate for this race. 

10K - one loop of course (6.55 miles)

Half Marathon - two loops of course (13.1 miles)

Half Marathon Course Requirement

All runners will reach mile 6.55 (start 2nd loop) by 11:18 AM. Runners that have not completed this distance by 11:18 AM will not be permitted to continue on the course. A 20:00 per mile pace was used to determine this required course cut off time.

WATER STATIONS

To reduce the amount of contact between runners and race management, participants are HIGHLY encourage to wear a camelback or fuel belt during the race. There will be 2 aid stations along the loop course. Both will be serving water and gatorade.

Water Station # 1 is located at mile 3/mile 9.5. 

Water Station # 2 is located at the start/finish line (start of 2nd loop for half marathoners).

BATHROOMS

The bathroom building located in Area 1 will be open.

There are no bathrooms along the run course. 

PARTICIPANT SHIRT & FINISHER MEDAL

Participants will receive the shirt size they selected at online registration. We will purchase extra participant shirts to those who wish to exchange their shirt for a different size. Shirt exchanges can be completed at the conclusion of the race. Athletes will receive a finisher medal at the finish line. 

TIMING & RESULTS

This race will use bib tag timing. Your timing chip will be affixed to the back side of your bib number. Please do not remove your timing chip. If you drop out of the race at any point, please notify member of the race staff. It is essential that we know where you are on the course at all times for your safety and our peace of mind.

 

This event will be publishing LIVE results through out the race. To access results on race day, go to www.ripitevents.com and access the "Results" webpage from your smart phone. Choose this race from the race options and enter your bib number on the results page.

AWARDS

Awards will be given to the top finisher in the following group categories for both the Half Marathon & 10K: Overall, 7-8, 9-10, 11-13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+. ​​

 

PARKING

Participants may park in the public parking garage for this event near the race venue. Use 6000 Merriweather Drive, Columbia, MD 21044 to get to the race venue on race morning. Following parking signs to access the parking garage. Then follow venue signs to get to packet pick up and the start/finish line.
