About

Presented by Rip It Events, this event is designed to help YOU prepare for the Luray International and Sprint Triathlons as well as other short course triathlons with open water swims. Additionally, this event is meant to give triathletes an opportunity to practice open water swimming in a safe, lifeguarded, stress free, non-‐competitive environment and to bolster your confidence. This event is appropriate for all levels and is located at the race venue - Lake Arrowhead Recreation Park, Luray, VA. Participants do not need to be registered for the Luray Triathlon on Aug 19-20 to register to participate in this event.

There are two parts of this event, the Swim Clinic and the Open Water Swim Practice. Participants may register for one or both parts.

Swim Clinic - 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM

The swim clinic includes a instructional component and a lifeguard supervised open water practice swim in Lake Arrowhead; a review of the race site and transition area; plus a chance to ask a Pro Triathlete and the Race Director any questions that you have about the open water swimming and the Luray Triathlon event. There will be a review of the transition area and flow from swim to bike to run to finish. You are welcome to bike and run the race course on your own after the clinic.

Please note that this is not an individual stroke clinic.

Open Water Swim - 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM

Practice your open water swimming with us at Lake Arrowhead. The course will be marked with buoys and you are welcome to swim multiple laps of the course within the allotted time frame. There is no swim clinic or instruction associated with the open water swim. You are welcome to bike and run the race course on your own after your swim.

Important!

All participants of this event (both clinic and open water) are required to have an annual USA Triathlon annual membership or purchase a one-day license at online registration.

Arrival

Upon arrival, please check in at the Modern Woodsman Shelter. We will provide you with a wrist band that must be worn the entire clinic and open water swim. You will receive a t-shirt and swim cap.

What to Bring

Swimming gear, towel, goggles, nutrition, sun screen and a change of clothes. Water temperatures have ranged between mid 70’s to mid 80’s in years past. Wetsuits are permitted since this is not a competition. You can also bring your bike and running gear as many will be taking advantage of being in Luray to do some post clinic/swim training.

Water Temp

Participants can expect the water temp to be in the low 80's F. Given this is a practice swim, wetsuits will be allowed, no mater what the morning temperature is during our practice swim. Plan to bring your wetsuit to practice in. We recommend you do some laps without your wetsuit so you can be ready for any conditions on race day.

Inclement Weather

This is a rain or shine event! We will swim in the rain but will not enter the water if there are thunder storms present. We will alter the swim time if needed to work around storms. In an extreme case we

may be forced to cancel the swim practice all together.

Park Amenities

Check in is under the Modern Woodsman Pavilion. The clinic will take place under this pavillion as well. There will be a short walk down to the water for the practice swim. Bathrooms are available on site and a few port-a-johns at the beach. There are no showers available at the park.

Swim Course (click images below for race maps)

The swim course will be 750 meters. Participants are welcome to swim as many loops as desired. We will mark the course with buoys and will have paddle boarders and kayakers for your safety.
