7th Annual Discover Downtown Columbia 5K

The Downtown Columbia Partnership is hosting the 7th annual Discover Downtown Columbia 5K on Sunday, October 4 at the Lakefront Plaza in Downtown Columbia. 

The 5K course takes runners and walkers through the landmarks of Downtown Columbia, highlighting its history as well as the future that’s unfolding. This year’s race features a loop trail that starts and ends at the People Tree and winds past The Metropolitan, TEN.M and m.flats apartments and One and Two Merriweather office buildings, through Symphony Woods and into Merriweather Post Pavilion where participants will cross the stage and see the new renovations. The route continues past Toby’s Dinner Theatre and the Central Branch of the Howard County Library and around Lake Kittamqundi and back to the People Tree for the finish line. 

Participants will receive shirt, finish medal, post race food and beer.​

Runners must be at least 8 years old to participate in this race.

In-person registration is available at the packet pick up the date before the race and on race morning. Payment accepted is cash, credit or check. T-shirt size not guaranteed for late in-person registration.


  • All participants must register online or in person on race day. 

  • Race day registrants are not guaranteed shirt.

  • Athletes must be at least 8 years old on race day to participate.

  • Race organizers reserve the right to close registration due to capacity limits.

  • Race organizers reserve the right to delay or cancel event due to extreme weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

  • The following are prohibited during the race: pets, baby joggers/strollers, in-line skates, bicycles, and any other non-official wheeled vehicles.

  • All registrations are final. No refunds. 

  • Registrations (bibs) may not be transferred to non-registered athletes. 

  • If the race sells out prior to race weekend, there are no bib transfers permitted.

Participants may elect to defer their 2020 registration to the 2021 race. A $5.00 fee will be required to defer registrations. To defer your registration, email us at racedirector@ripitevents.com. 


Registered participants are required to pick up their packet before the start of the race. If you're unable to attend packet pick-up, someone may pick up your packet on your behalf. Packet pick up will at the following times/locations:

  • Friday, October 2, TBD

  • Saturday, October 3, TBD

  • Sunday, October 4, 7:30 AM - 9:00 AM - at the race venue on the lake front.

Athletes who finish this race will receive a finisher medal at the finish line. 


Participants will receive the shirt size they selected at online registration. We will purchase extra participant shirts to those who wish to exchange their shirt for a different size. Shirt exchanges can be completed at the conclusion of the award ceremony. ALL PARTICIPANTS WHO REGISTER BY 11:59PM, SEPTEMBER 20 ARE GUARANTEED A T-SHIRT!  



This race will use bib tag timing. Your timing chip will be affixed to the back side of your bib number. Please do not remove your timing chip.

This event will be publishing LIVE results through out the race. There are two ways to access results:


1. Use your mobile phone.

Simply go to www.ripitevents.com and access the "Results" webpage from the menu. Chose this race from the race options and enter your bib number on the results page.


2. Go to the RESULTS tent in the post race area.

Enter your bib number into the computer and view your results on the screen. 


Awards will be given to the top three finishers in the following group categories:  Overall, 7-8, 9-10, 11-13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70+. The awards ceremony will begin at approx 10:00 AM. 


There are port-a-potties located near the entrance to the lake front above the fountain. Please do not use the bathrooms inside Whole Foods and Haven on the Lake.


Participant food & drink will be located on the lake front. Food is for participants only. Attached to each bib number are food and beer tickets. Please do not remove these tags until you are ready to redeem them. Those participants who wish to redeem their beer tickets must present ID to do so.


Participants and spectators may park in public parking areas for this event including the Columbia Mall. Please do not park in the Whole Foods parking lot.
